Notes:
OK, so this will never be "officially" released but
it is an album's worth of songs.
I wanted to do this for a couple of years and on
February 26th, I finally started it. All 15 songs
had a basic track using the
56 Junior and the
Yamaha keyboard's drum patterns. Then, in the same
day, I got all the bass tracks done using just the
EB-3. All songs got an acoustic guitar
track (technically 2) on the 28th. All acoustics
were the
Ovation. I
planned on using the Baby and Resonator but that never
happened. March 1st, I got all my drum tracks
done. Most of the rhythm guitar tracks were redone
with the
SG3 on the 3rd and also
all the slide guitars. I used the
Special for slide.
After hearing the guitar sound, the Special is
officially my slide guitar. Also, all electric
guitars went in direct using the SansAmp. March
6th got all the vocals done in the morning and at night,
all the percussion parts were recorded. On the
7th, the remaining guitar bits were recorded using the
Studio Plus. On
the 8th, I just put some icing on the cake by adding a
few "leslie" guitars with the Line 6 Roto Machine pedal
to some songs and that was it.
Mixing was done on March 10th. And just for
fun, I mixed a few in mono and most ended up being
better than the stereo mixes.
Painless. And it would have been done sooner if
I wasn't playing on the weekends. Oh, and this
isn't an Elvis parody album.
Anyways, here we go, song-by-song:
That's Alright Mama
I guess this would have to be the first song on this
disc. I always loved this song. I recorded a
version of this in 1998 but this turned out better than
that one. I love he sound of the slide guitar.
That was the Marshall setting on the SansAmp. I
did record two drum tracks, one doing a two-step and one
playing a beat but it the end I didn't use either.
Guitars: 56 Junior, Studio for "leslie guitar", Ovation,
Epiphone Special (slide)
Blue Moon Of Kentucky
I like this song. The middle part's pretty high
and I didn't think I'd be able to hit it, but somehow I
did. I'm still scratching my head on that one.
Guitars: Special, SG3, Ovation
I Don't Care If The Sun Don't Shine
OK, so it's cutesy but I like the song. There was
a drum track for this too but out of fun I recorded a
bongo track and that ended up sticking.
Guitars: Studio (solo and "leslie" guitar), Ovation
You're A Heartbreaker (mono)
Another song I didn't think I'd be able to sing but it
turned out...as good as it could.
Guitars: Studio (finger picking), Special (slide),
Ovation
Baby, Let's Play House (mono)
This was different, but OK. I'm still not really
good at pitching on my own (obvious in the breaks) but
it's passable. The percussion turned out alright
too. Guitars: SG3 (rhythm); Special (slide); Studio
(other solo), Ovation
I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone
I recorded a version of this in 1999 and again, this one
turned out a lot better even though the arrangement was
basically the same as what I had originally.
Guitars: SG3, Special, Ovation
Mystery Train (mono)
Too bad I can't sing better. Other than the vocal,
this could be one of the best tracks I've recorded.
Guitars: SG3 (rhythm), Studio (solos), Ovation
I Forgot To Remember To Forget (mono)
I like this song. that's why I covered it. The
vocal, albeit shaky, is mostly in tune. Nice
surprise. I keep saying that because this time I
didn't use a guitar track for a guide vocal on any of
the songs.
Guitars: SG3, Special, Ovation
Blue Moon (mono)
My second time covering this. The first time was again
in 1999 and I was going to basically redo that one
again. I even did a drum track for it but it was
too choppy. The 1 comes quicker than you'd think.
So after doing, what I thought was a normal slide track
ended up being the "vocal". That's when I dropped
the drums and added the tambourine and bongos (real ones
too).
Guitars: SG3; Special, Ovation
One Side Love Affair (mono)
I'm still wondering why I did this one but it turned out
OK. Pretty surprised.
Guitars: SG3 (solo); Studio (rhythm), Ovation
My Baby Left Me (mono)
One of my favourite Elvis songs. The SG3 sounds great
through the SansAmp.
Guitars: SG3; 56 Junior (rhythm)
Love Me
I think this is the first Elvis song I covered way back
in 1992. That had a vocal on it too. This
one, after hearing the guitar do the vocal line, I
thought I'd leave it instrumental.
Guitars: SG3, Ovation.
So Glad You're Mine (mono)
I was tempted to follow Muddy Waters version but I
basically followed Elvis'. The drums are pretty shaky
and I planned on redoing them. Instead, I did a
tambourine track and put it up in the mix.
Actually kind of hides it.
Guitars: Special; SG3, Ovation
Lawdy Miss Clawdy
One of my favourite Elvis songs. Lots of guitars
on this one. The drums again were pretty sloppy
and again, the tambourine helps save it. Also the
other hundred guitars. The "why" is because the
song order here is the order I recorded them so things
get a little looser at the end. This was the first
song to get a slide guitar. I liked what I heard
(from the SansAmp) so this made me go back put slide
tracks on almost every other song.
Guitars: Special; SG3; Studio (rhythm and "leslie"
guitar)
So there we go. I guess I can be productive when I
want to. Just as long as I'm not reproductive,
I'll be OK. I did start a version of Trying To Get
To You but I just couldn't get the singing. Lots
of slide, the most acoustics I've recorded in one
sitting; this'll be as Country as I'll ever get. I
haven't decided if I'll do a part 2 with songs like
Hound Dog, Shake Rattle and Roll, etc. Maybe. In a
couple of years.
