A Look At Being Indie

I was thinking about this for a little bit - actually since RadioIndy.com wrote a beautiful review about Will Work For Money a couple of months ago and then even gave me a Gold Artist Award:

So, am I "Indie"?

I didn't put too much research into it but I'm going to guess that "Indie" is supposed to mean "independent", as in doing everything without the help of a major label.  I hope so because somewhere along the way, back when I was in high school, "Indie" became a genre and it was a style of music I couldn't really care less for.  I think that was the predecessor for "Alternative".  People were putting on fake cockney accents way before Oasis (but I think their accent is legit - I don't know, I never got into them either).  But Indie bands ended up with more CDs than I could ever print off.

You might see where I'm going with this.

I'd like to think I'm about as Independent as it gets.  My own DNA comes with each CD since I'm still using scissors to cut the covers out (you'll still need my permission if you are going to clone me).  I have to make and play the songs; be the Engineer; be my own producer (it's getting easier to put myself in third person mode); do my own mixing; make my own covers; make the actual CDs and then update the website every month.

And it's not that I can't "play well with others", it's just quicker for me to do everything.  The quicker I can get a bunch of songs off my chest, the quicker I can start more, which leads to playing more guitar.  See why I do it so much?

Now on the flipside, do I play Indie-type music?

Nope. I think that if you liked "Indie" music you probably wouldn't care for the songs I have on this site.  Some people might even say, "Eewwww - it almost sounds like Rock."  But the more I listened to other people on the RadioIndy website, the more I was surprised to hear non-Indie sounding music.  Oddly enough, the 2 styles I heard the most were new-ish R&B and Folk (or they call it "Americana" now).

Now there's also "Indy Record Labels" which sounds almost like an oxymoron.  I guess it's less money to pay back if the CD doesn't do well.

So who do I thank for letting me get this far?  You, the reader, of course; places like CD Baby....well, OK, just CD Baby. No other site I've seen comes close to what CD Baby does.  Places like RadioIndy that actually helps guys like me.  Do I want to be a big super Rock Star?  Not really - I'm not Rock Star material and I don't have the personality to compete with big headed 20 year olds.  But I wouldn't playing with a big Rock Star as long as they're not an asshole.

That's all I could come up with.  Like I said on the News and Letters page: nothing really got solved - I still don't know where I fit in and that's OK, I don't plan on stopping any time soon.
