Epiphone Les Paul Special

On September 14th, 2010, I gave myself an early Birthday present.  I got an Epiphone Les Paul Special in TV Yellow and P90s.  I'm impressed.

I got it off of Musician's Friend and it was hard to pass by at a whopping $300.  OK, $299 but that's nitpicking.  I figured at that price, even it was a lemon, I could hang it on the wall or something.

I was surprised on what a nice job Epiphone did.  There's even a Custom Shop thing on the back but Epiphone really doesn't have a Custom Shop (try and search for it).  And, they say it's a "Limited Edition".  Sold. I think the only complaint I had, and it's not really a complaint, is that the strings were a little too high.  See?  Not much to complain about.  OK, maybe one flaw.  The screws in the pickups (not the pole pieces) sit oddly high; they should be almost flush with the plastic.  I couldn't find my good screwdriver but I did lower them but not too much since I didn't want to strip the screws.

What I noticed too is that the frets don't cut your hands like they used to.  Nice and smooth.  Mine didn't have any paint on the fretboard like I read about.  And real Grovers. Nice.

It sounds pretty great.  I didn't fart around too much with the clean sounds but using the trusty DS-1 and the Vox amp made me smile.

And it looks cool.

I had a real Les Paul Special (1995) only in red with P100s (that I eventually put P90s in) along time ago, and of course that was a better guitar but this one will do just fine. I might even take this out in public.

(above) Real Grovers.  A nice surprise.

(left) When it sits a certain angle and the light hits it right, you can see the seams for a 4 piece body.

(left) Epiphone's P-90s aren't all that bad.
